The Earning Landscape
Bitcointalk has a number of legitimate earning paths. They split into five buckets, each with different income ceilings, time investments, and risk profiles.
1. Signature campaigns
Paid to wear a project's signature on your forum posts. Rank-gated, and never guaranteed income.
- Effort: Post quality content daily in your usual boards
- Income: Set per campaign, usually a flat weekly rate that rises with rank — read the campaign thread for real numbers
- Risk: Wearing a scam signature damages your reputation
2. Bounty programs
One-time campaigns for specific output: translation, blog posts, social media, design.
- Effort: Project-by-project
- Income: Varies widely by scope and project — the pool and split are stated in the bounty thread
- Risk: Some bounty projects don't pay; vet the campaign manager
3. Services + freelancing
Sell skills directly on the Services board: writing, design, coding, marketing, escrow.
- Effort: Whatever your service takes
- Income: Market rate for the skill
- Risk: Counterparty risk; reputation is everything
4. Marketplace
Sell physical goods (or other things) for BTC.
- Effort: Standard e-commerce work + shipping
- Income: Your margin
- Risk: Fraud, returns, escrow disputes
5. Trading + currency exchange
Sell BTC for local cash or other crypto, or arbitrage between exchanges.
- Effort: Active monitoring
- Income: Spread/profit on transactions
- Risk: Counterparty + regulatory
How most forum earners actually do it
The successful forum earners almost always combine 2-3 of these:
- A steady signature campaign for predictable monthly income
- Occasional bounty work for short-term spikes
- A specific service offering tied to their expertise
Diversification matters because any single source can disappear — a campaign ends, a project goes under, the marketplace cools.
What to avoid
- Anything that requires deposit or "verification fee"
- Promoting projects you wouldn't personally use
- Working for managers without a long public trust history
- Working faster than you can do good work
